The parad0x of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but
sh0rter tempers; wider freeways but narrower viewpoints.
We spend m0re, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less.
We have bigger h0uses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less
time; we have m0re degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less
judgment;m0re experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness.
We drink t0o much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little,
drive t0o fast, get too angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too
tired, read t0o seldom, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied 0ur possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk t0o much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We've learned h0w to make a living, but not a life; we've added years to
life, n0t life to years.
We've been all the way t0 the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the
street t0 meet the new neighbor.
We've c0nquered outer space, but not inner space.
We've d0ne larger things, but not better things.
We've cleaned up the air, but p0lluted the soul.
We've split the at0m, but not our prejudice.
We write m0re, but learn less.
We plan m0re, but accomplish less.
We've learned t0 rush, but not to wait.
We build m0re computers to hold more information to produce more
c0pies than ever, but have less communication.
These are the times 0f fast food and slow digestion; tall men, and short
character; steep pr0fits, and shallow relationships. These are the
times 0f world peace, but domestic warfare; more leisure, but less fun;
m0re kinds of food, but less nutrition.
These are days 0f two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but
br0ken homes.
These are days 0f quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality,
0ne-night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do
everything fr0m cheer to quiet, to kill.
It is a time when there is much in the sh0w window and nothing in the
st0ckroom; a time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a
timewhen y0u can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.
